Obama, Wright, Blackness and the Unsaid

I have no brain space right now. So this is telegraphic.

Much of the criticism of Obama and Wright has focused on their being somehow “un-American.” An oft-quoted Clintonism, especially when she is courting white working-class voters is “this is not the America I know.”

What is less spoken about by commentators and just as vital is the implicit argument that black citizens are not “as American.” If you pay close attention to the racialized rhetoric, it becomes quite clear that many white commentators are not only asking black commentators and politicians to prove they are patriotic, but also, to justify their citizenship.

It’s insidious.
